Summary

Ratatouille meets Roald Dahl in the funny and fantastical story of a determined mouse on a mission to procure the world's tastiest cheese。 From the author of A Boy Called Christmas-now a Netflix movie starring Kristen Wiig, Maggie Smith and Henry Lawfull!

When Nikolas left the only home he had ever known, it was a mouse named Miika who kept him company, and it was Miika who accompanied him on his journey to the Far North, in search of his father。 But before the events of A Boy Called Christmas, this little mouse was the hero of his own story。

A Mouse Called Miika is an epic adventure story on a miniature scale。 It's a tale of mice and men (and more mice)。 It is about one independent mouse who gets fed up with the other mice, and sets out on a quest of his own to prove that cheese exists, and learns to appreciate other creatures。 It is also a tale of great love (of cheese) and great danger。 And learning the lesson that, with cheese, as with life, what matters most is not how strongly you smell, but how strong you are on the inside。

Funny, cheeky, wise, and packed full of Matt Haig's signature warmth。 This is set to become a year-round children's favorite。

This is a lovely story with some brilliant illustrations。 Miika is enjoying eating a mushroom while sitting beside his new mouse friend Bridget the Brave。 He’s glad he has found a friend who is like him。 But Bridget tells him that they aren’t alike at all and that Miika isn’t brave like her。 So one day Miika decides to do something brave while having a ride on the reindeer Blitzen’s back。 But Miika’s brave act results in an accident, one that has unintended consequences。I have really enjoyed rea This is a lovely story with some brilliant illustrations。 Miika is enjoying eating a mushroom while sitting beside his new mouse friend Bridget the Brave。 He’s glad he has found a friend who is like him。 But Bridget tells him that they aren’t alike at all and that Miika isn’t brave like her。 So one day Miika decides to do something brave while having a ride on the reindeer Blitzen’s back。 But Miika’s brave act results in an accident, one that has unintended consequences。I have really enjoyed reading this story and getting to know Miika and the world of Elfhelm。 I have never read a book in the ‘Boy Called Christmas’ series before but even though there are a lot of characters mentioned and seen from the previous books, this works well as a standalone story too。 As we get to know Miika more, we find out a back story about his life and how he came to be living his days in Elfhelm and eating mushrooms in the woods with Bridget。 I like how this story goes and how Miika wants to show Bridget he’s brave like her。 Unfortunately something happens when he’s trying to show off how brave he is and soon Miika finds himself experiencing new and strange magical things。I don’t want to give too much away as it’s interesting to read the story, but I like how we see Miika’s friendships with the different characters: Nikolas, the Truth Pixie and Bridget the Brave, who is a mouse, and how Miika later discovers the truth about those friendships and how he grows as a character in the story too。 The book is filled with short chapters which each having a title and I love how the first letter of a new chapter is beautifully illustrated with a mouse sitting on it in different positions。 The book is illustrated throughout on various pages and I love how Miika and some of the other characters look。 You can really see the expressions on the characters well and I even like how the trolls look later on in the story!Although it took me some time to really get into the story, perhaps as I wasn’t used to this world of Elfhelm, elves, etc。, once I did I really enjoyed what happened especially as Miika later learns not only what it is to be truly brave but about true friendship and being true to himself。 It’s a wonderful story showing how much he grows as a character and has such a lovely and heart-warming ending too。 At the end of the book there is the first chapter of the book ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ to read which has made me want to read that book now, and the rest of this series。 There are also some fun extra activities for children to do at the end of the book too such as designing your own cheese or drawing a picture of Miika in the spaces provided。Overall this is a lovely book with a great story which I’m sure many children will enjoy。 It works well as a standalone story and is a brilliant story with a heart-warming ending about a mouse discovering the truth about himself and friendships。 It’s also a funny story too, especially later when the trolls are involved, it just becomes even more funny and silly, but also brilliant too。 A great story which is perfect for reading at Christmastime。-Thanks to Canongate Books for a free paperback copy 。。。more

Another great story and I think this is a lesson a few people need to learn。‘but the truth is, not everyone will like us。 Not everyone we meet will always want the best for us。 And not everyone will know our truth。 If people want to hate us, it’s easier to let them。 You see, it is better to be disliked for being who you are than to be liked for who you are not。 Being who you are not is exhausting。’

May I never grow too old for talking mice and Truth Pixies。 Miika is the cheeky, independent mouse in this quest tale, and he is worthy of an audience。 In his odyssey to prove cheese exists, he falls in with some interesting characters and learns lessons about life。 An endearing romp。

I have been enjoying starting my Christmas reads with the Matt Haig Christmas series。 This one isn't exactly Christmas themed but it does take place at Elfhelm。 It embraces the sentiment of the other stories but I was wishing it was longer and I could really enjoy all the characters。 But, it is a children's story so I shouldn't complain ;-) I have been enjoying starting my Christmas reads with the Matt Haig Christmas series。 This one isn't exactly Christmas themed but it does take place at Elfhelm。 It embraces the sentiment of the other stories but I was wishing it was longer and I could really enjoy all the characters。 But, it is a children's story so I shouldn't complain ;-) 。。。more

Matt Haig is my favorite (living) author。 Everything he writes is a delight to me, whether it be non-fiction centered on mental wellbeing, or sci-fi/fantasy fiction, or children's books such as this one。 Even though this is a children's book, adults will enjoy reading it too and will chuckle at humor that is doled out on multiple levels of meaning。 Wish I had a young person for reading it aloud。 This story is a follow-on to the characters in Matt Haig's previous children's Christmas books。 You c Matt Haig is my favorite (living) author。 Everything he writes is a delight to me, whether it be non-fiction centered on mental wellbeing, or sci-fi/fantasy fiction, or children's books such as this one。 Even though this is a children's book, adults will enjoy reading it too and will chuckle at humor that is doled out on multiple levels of meaning。 Wish I had a young person for reading it aloud。 This story is a follow-on to the characters in Matt Haig's previous children's Christmas books。 You could read them or watch the terrific movie adaptation of "A Boy Called Christmas" that was released last year (now available on Netflix)。 It will provide the reader with more background on Miika the mouse and his friends, although the story stands just fine on its own。 It provides a valuable lesson on the importance of being true to yourself。 。。。more
